106 BME&BCE

Fundamentals of Engineering 1 (June 2006)
a. Civil Engineering
1a. With neat sketches explain any six structural steel sections used in construction
b. What are the requirements of good quality aggregates?
2a. Write notes on any six types of cement
b. Explain the Indian Standard Classification of bricks
3a. Explain the conditions in which pile foundations is adopted
b. Compare English bond and Flemish bond
4 . Draw the plan of the alternate courses of a 1 1/2 brick thick English bonnd wall. Also draw the elevation. Make sketches of the typical bricks used and mark their dimensions
5a. Explain the main principles of surveying
b. With the help of sketches explain the uses of cross-staff and optical square
c. Explain any one method of indirect ranging
6 . The following consecutive readings were taken with the help of a Dumpy level. 2.550, 3.760, 3.900, 2.100, 1.870, 1.550, 1.250, 2.540, 2.050, 3.150. The instrument was shifted after the third and seventh readings. The first reading was taken on the staff held on the bench mark of reduced levels 100.000m. Enterthe above readings in a level book form and work out the reduced levels of the point by height of collimation method
b.Mechanical Engineering
1a. Derive an expression for work done in an adiabatic process
b. A closed vessel containing 2Kg of carbon dioxide is at a temperature 20 degree celsius and pressure of 0.7 bar. Heat is supplied to the vessel till the gas acquires a pressure of 1.4 bar. Calculate: final temperature, work done on or by the gas, heat added, change in internal energy
2a. Explain the Kelvin-Plank and Clausius statements of the second law of thermodynamics and prove their equivalence
b. A carnot heat engine recieves 50 KJ of heat per cycle from a high temperature source at 652 degree celsius and reject heat to a low temperature sink at 30 degree celsius. Determine the carnot efficiency and the amount of heat rejected to the sink per cycle
3a. Derive an expression for theair standard efficiency of Diesel cycle
b. An engine working on the otto cycle has a cylinder diameter of 150mm and stroke of 225mm. The clearance volume is 1.25x10^-3 m^3. Find the air standard efficiency. Take gama=1.4
4a. Explain the working of a four stroke C.I engine with a neat sketch
b. Explain with the help of a neat sketch, a plain carburattor showing idiling jet and choke. What is the function of choke?
5a. Explain the terms:i) saturation temperature ii) Wet steam
iii) super heated steam iv) dryness fraction
b. Explain the working of a Babcock and Wilcox water tube boiler with a neat sketch
6a. Explain the difference between impulse turbine and reaction turbine
b. Explain the term 'compounding' in steam turbines. Discuss various methods of compounding steam turbines
